Welcome to this Iris Guitar Tutorial by the Goo Goo Dolls! I must admit when I was first learning guitar this song always gave me trouble because i didn’t know what to do with the alternative tuning and the song structure seemed confusing. However now I know better! It’s actually an extremely simple song when broken down. In this lesson i’ll teach you 2 different ways of playing this 90’s classic.

1. Standard(ish) tuning version – for those who don’t want to fully detune their guitar this is the best option, it will only require you to detune the high e string. But even if you don’t want to do that you could just avoid playing the high e string when strumming.
2. Alternate tuning version – BDDDDD is the tuning for this studio version which is the exact way Johnny Rzeznik from the Goo Goo dolls plays it. In this tuning the song is much much simpler to play and sounds stunning. By detuning you might risk snapping strings though, so be careful!
